The hammer is used to recollect a chip. For a sample to be considered a chip, it must be forcibly removed from a larger rock. A hammer is not only used for recollecting samples but on reparation tasks that astronauts may have to carry out while on their mission.

The design of the hammer makes it easy to carry it around, but the most important thing is that it ensures the safety of the astronaut, by avoiding sharp edges, while it still fulfills its task.
